While browsing for books in my closing Borders store (*tear*), I ran across this series that I normally would have passed by, but since everything was 40% off, I stopped for a look. I have read 2 of the 3 in the series (the 3rd won’t be out until Fall 2011), and I found it to be pretty immature – even for a YA novel. As shown in the quotes above, the heroine, Opal Cowan, never gains her self-confidence – not even when she saves multiple people over and over. She still asks for validation at every turn. The premise of the series is that Opal Cowan is being trained as a student magician. She also happens to be a glass maker. Her special gift combines the two: she can make magic with glass. This ranges from creating glass messenger figurines to capturing another magician’s magic in a glass orb and using it later. There are times that the story assumes you know too much about certain character histories, so you find your head spinning and thinking that you have short-term memory. There are multiple character arcs and intrigues that keep you interested (even when confused), but I would suggest that if you’re over 14, this be considered a “fluff” read.
